WHAT ARE HEARTWORMS?

Heartworms are blood parasites that are spread by mosquitoes. Heartworm infection, if not treated, can be fatal. Adult worms can grow up to 14 inches long and block the vessels in the heart, which restricts blood flow to major organs such as lungs, kidneys, and the liver, and result in organ failure. Heartworms are transmitted to your pet by mosquitoes.
